Agronomic Management Area

Description

The steadily increasing world population requires that global agriculture practically doubles food production by 2050 to ensure food security of 9.8 million people. However, future increment in the arable land will be restricted. Therefore, agricultural growth must rely more than ever on productivity gains through increased crop yields. In this context, potato crops the third food crop (after rice and wheat), with a global dry matter yield of 3.8 t/ha (19 t fresh yield/ha) is characterized by a remarkably high gap between the potential and actual yield in many areas of the world, especially in developing countries such those of Latinoamerica. Therefore, the most likely scenario, and the challenge for potato production systems, is to raise the production of potatoes with the same or less amount of land. In others words, this implies closing this yield gap through sustainable intensification management.
